Where you stay in Formigal-Panticosa decides which sector you ski most. The Formigal village puts you under the biggest sector and next to the après-ski. Sallent de Gállego, a few minutes below, is the historic capital of the Valle de Tena. And Panticosa, further down the valley, has its own gondola into the smaller Panticosa sector. Aramón’s travel agency, Viajes Aramón, sells hotels and apartments across the valley with packages that include your lift pass.

Best areas to stay in Formigal-Panticosa

Formigal village

The purpose-built resort at about 1,500 m, founded in 1964 and part of the municipality of Sallent de Gállego. It has most of the hotels and restaurants in the valley and the closest beds to the Formigal lifts. The main access is the eight-seat Sallent chairlift by the Sextas building. A free Aramón bus links the village with the Sextas and Anayet bases every day. It’s the obvious choice for après-ski, but it’s a resort built for skiing rather than a village with history.

Sallent de Gállego

The capital of the Valle de Tena, beside the Lanuza reservoir and below Foratata peak, with a Gothic church from the early 16th century. It’s a few kilometres down the road from Formigal and a stop on the free shuttle between Panticosa and Formigal. Pick it for stone streets and a more local feel, at the cost of a short drive or bus each morning.

Panticosa

A village further down the valley with its own gondola up to Petrosos and the Panticosa sector. Aramón’s free shuttle stops at all of Panticosa’s hotels on its way to the gondola, and another free bus runs to Formigal. It’s quieter than Formigal and suits families and anyone happy to ski the smaller sector on most days.

Balneario de Panticosa

A historic thermal spa resort at 1,636 m, in a high valley above Panticosa village, with two four-star hotels and three thermal spaces. It’s a beautiful, peaceful base for a spa-and-ski break, but you’ll need a car to reach the slopes.

Tips for booking a last-minute stay in Formigal-Panticosa

  • Check what’s open first. In a thin spell, stay in the Formigal village, where you can reach the higher valleys by bus or lift. Panticosa is lower.
  • Look at packages. Viajes Aramón sells hotel and lift pass deals, including set offers for the early-December bridge holiday, Christmas, New Year and Three Kings.
  • Avoid Spanish long weekends if you can. The early-December bridge, Christmas, New Year and Easter are the busiest and dearest.
  • Check opening dates. Some hotels reopen after the lifts: Hotel Escalar, for example, says it’s back in December.
  • No car? Stay in the Formigal village or on the shuttle route in Panticosa or Sallent, and use the free Aramón buses.
