Ski area: GrandvaliraGood for:BeginnersFamilies

Grandvalira is a strong choice for families, especially if your children are learning. The terrain is broad and friendly, under-6s ski free, there are snow gardens in most sectors, and every sector has a free themed trail for children. The things to plan around are the shorter Pyrenean season and the fact that childcare isn’t available in every sector, so where you stay matters.

Is Grandvalira good for families?

Yes, particularly for younger children and beginners. What makes it work:

  • Free skiing for under-6s. Children up to 5 ski free with proof of age.
  • Lots of places to learn. Grandvalira has seven snow gardens and six themed children’s areas, and the ski school teaches children in six sectors.
  • Free children’s trails in every sector, which turn a ski day into a game.
  • Reachable by road from Barcelona and Toulouse, about 200 km each, with no flight needed if you live in Spain or south-west France.

Ski schools and kids’ lessons in Grandvalira

Grandvalira’s own ski school, with more than 500 certified instructors, teaches children in Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo, Grau Roig, Encamp and Pas de la Casa. The school says children can ideally start at 3 or 4.

  • Snow Garden: games and first ski or snowboard lessons on closed circuits, from age 3. The school gives the upper age as 5 or 6 in different places, so check for your child.
  • Kids Program: for ages 3 to 11, with ski or snowboard lessons, activities and lunch on the mountain, for up to five days.
  • Group lessons: for ages 6 to 11, three hours a day for at least two days, grouped by level. Snowboard groups run in Soldeu, El Tarter and Canillo.

Multi-day courses start on Mondays in Pas de la Casa, Grau Roig, Encamp and Canillo, and on Mondays or Saturdays in Soldeu and El Tarter. Every ski school service needs a valid ski pass, and lesson prices don’t include the pass or equipment hire. Book ahead for school holidays.

Tips for skiing in Grandvalira with kids

  • Choose your sector for childcare. With a toddler under 3, Grau Roig is the only nursery. Over-2s can go to kindergarten in Canillo, El Tarter or Soldeu.
  • Mind the season. Grandvalira runs from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, subject to snow. Early and late in the season, check what’s open on the lower slopes.
  • Andorra’s winter driving rules apply from 1 November to 15 May. Carry chains or fit winter tyres, and allow extra time for border queues with children in the car.
  • Busy weeks: school holidays and the World Cup weekend in Soldeu (6 and 7 March 2027) are the busiest times.
