Grandvalira isn’t one resort but a chain of bases along Andorra’s main road, from Pas de la Casa on the French border down to Encamp. Each sector has a different character and different lifts, so the sector you choose matters more than the hotel. Here’s how they compare, and the hotels we’d look at in each.
Best areas to stay in Grandvalira
Soldeu
The best-known village and the easiest all-round base. A gondola takes you straight up to the slopes, there’s a good spread of hotels, a ski school, a kindergarten for children over 2, and the Yokai children’s trail. Soldeu also hosts the World Cup on the Avet slope on 6 and 7 March 2027, so expect it to be busy that weekend. Parking in Soldeu is paid.
El Tarter
Just down the valley from Soldeu, with slope-side hotels and gondola access. It’s quieter in the evenings, and has a kindergarten, a snowpark and the Turbo Snow Explorers children’s trail. A good choice for families who want to be close to the snow but not in the thick of it.

Canillo
Further down the valley, with a gondola up to the slopes, quiet beginner areas, the free Mont Magic family trail and the Mon(t) Màgic family park. One of three sectors with a kindergarten. A calm, practical base for families with beginners.
Encamp
The lowest base, linked to the ski area by the Funicamp, a funitel of about 6 km up to Solanelles at 2,500 m. You can park free in four village car parks and take the Funibus, which runs about every 20 minutes, to the lift. It’s handy for Andorra la Vella and the Caldea spa, but you rely on the Funicamp to get up and down, and there’s no nursery here.
Grau Roig
A small, high base in the middle of the ski area, with ski-in/ski-out access and free parking. It has very little nightlife, but it does have Grandvalira’s only nursery for children aged 1 to 3. Best for families with toddlers and people who want to ski, not party.

Pas de la Casa
Right on the French border, with ski-in/ski-out accommodation, night skiing and the shortest drive from France. It’s also a busy duty-free shopping town, so it suits groups more than families looking for peace. There’s no nursery or kindergarten here.

Luxury hotels in Grandvalira
Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa in Soldeu is the area’s five-star address, at the foot of the slopes, with rooms that connect directly to the Sport Wellness Mountain Spa, which covers 5,000 m². The same group runs the Hermitage Mountain Residences, nine five-star apartments of 120 to 250 m², and the Hermitage Mountain Lodge, a ski-in/ski-out chalet at 1,700 m with a private chef and butler, sauna and hot tub.
Hotel Grau Roig is the upmarket choice if you’d rather be in the middle of the ski area than in a village. It holds the Andorra Selected label, and has a spa and five restaurants.
Good-value places to stay in Grandvalira
The quieter, lower villages of Encamp and Canillo are often better value than Soldeu or Pas de la Casa. You give up some convenience: you’ll ride the Funicamp or a gondola up each morning, and the lower slopes are the first to suffer in a mild spell. Hotel Kandahar in Pas de la Casa and Nexta Himàlaia in Soldeu are four-star options with family rooms that work out well for groups of four or five.
Grandvalira also sells hotel and ski pass packages for 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, plus December and Christmas offers, which are worth comparing with booking separately.
Tips for booking a last-minute stay in Grandvalira
- Check the snow before the price. Pyrenean snow varies a lot from week to week. If the lower slopes are thin, stay higher up, in Grau Roig, Pas de la Casa or Soldeu, rather than in Encamp.
- Pick your sector around the children. Kindergartens are only at Canillo, El Tarter and Soldeu, and the nursery for under-3s only at Grau Roig.
- Ask about parking. It’s free at Grau Roig and some El Tarter and Pas de la Casa car parks, but paid in Soldeu and Canillo. An adult or senior Andorra Pass gets 50% off parking in Canillo, El Tarter and Soldeu on days you ski.
- Time your border crossing. On peak days, avoid entering via Riu Runner between 8:00 and 11:00 and leaving between 15:00 and 20:00.
- Ask about opening dates. Some hotels don’t publish their winter dates, so check that yours is open for your stay, especially in early December and late March.
