Mayrhofen is a valley-floor town, not a ski-in/ski-out resort. You’ll take a cable car up and, usually, back down. That makes choosing a base fairly simple: decide how close you want to be to the Penkenbahn, the Ahornbahn or the Horbergbahn, and how much après-ski noise you can live with.

Best areas to stay in Mayrhofen

Centre, near the Penkenbahn

The heart of Mayrhofen, with the main Penken cable car, shops, restaurants and the busiest après-ski bars. It’s the obvious base for groups and for anyone who wants to walk to the lift. Light sleepers should check where their room faces, and families with young children may prefer a quieter street.

Near the Ahornbahn

The Ahornbahn takes you up to the gentle Ahorn plateau, the best beginners’ area, where the Mayrhofen 3000 children’s ski school has its own training area. Staying on this side of town makes sense for families with first-timers. Note that the Ahornbahn opens a week later and closes a week earlier than the Penken lifts: in 2026/27 it runs from 12 December to 4 April.

Hippach, Schwendau and the outlying villages

The holiday region also takes in Hippach, Schwendau, Ramsau, Brandberg and Ginzling. They’re quieter and often better value. The Horbergbahn, the second way up the Penken, leaves from the edge of town, and KinderLand Horberg is at its valley station. The ski bus links the lifts with the outlying parts of Mayrhofen and Hippach, but you’ll rely on it more, or on a car, so check the nearest stop before you book.

Hotels closest to the lifts in Mayrhofen

There’s no true ski-in/ski-out in Mayrhofen, but a few hotels are right by a lift:

  • Sport & Spa Hotel Strass, centre: right next to the Penkenbahn, with a 3,000 m² spa and its own ICEBAR après-ski bar. Ideal for groups and couples, not light sleepers.
  • Hotel Neue Post, centre: runs a ski bus from the door to the cable car.

Luxury and spa hotels in Mayrhofen

Mayrhofen’s upmarket hotels are about spas rather than slope access:

Good-value places to stay in Mayrhofen

The cheapest beds are usually in guesthouses and holiday apartments, in Mayrhofen itself and in the outlying villages of Hippach, Schwendau, Ramsau, Brandberg and Ginzling. The tourist office lists hotels, apartments, guesthouses and campsites. Two things keep costs down wherever you stay:

  • The digital guest card makes the Zillertalbahn free between Jenbach and the Zillertal from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, so you can arrive by train without paying for a transfer up the valley.
  • Children born in 2021 or later ride the Mayrhofner Bergbahnen lifts free with an adult.

Tips for booking a last-minute stay in Mayrhofen

  • Measure the walk to the lift. Most hotels are a walk or short ski-bus ride from the Penkenbahn. Check exactly how far before you book, especially with children carrying skis.
  • Plan for the trip down. Runs to the valley can be thin early and late in the season, so allow time for the cable car down at the end of the day.
  • Early December is quiet. The Penken lifts open on 4 December 2026, and the first weeks are usually calmer and cheaper than Christmas or February.
  • Check hotel opening dates. Not every hotel opens with the lifts: Alpenhotel Kramerwirt, for example, reopens on 10 December.
  • Ask about lift passes at reception. Some hotels and apartments are Mayrhofner Bergbahnen partners, where you can buy your ski pass on arrival and skip the ticket-office queue on day one.
  • Keep the glacier in mind. If snow is poor low down, a Zillertal 3000 pass adds the Hintertux Glacier at the head of the Tux valley, reached by bus or car.

For the skiing, lift passes and getting there, see the Mayrhofen ski resort guide.
