Obergurgl-Hochgurgl is small, and the lift company says more than 90% of its accommodation is under 250 m from the slopes. So the question isn’t really how far you’ll walk to a lift. It’s which of the two bases suits you, and how much you want to spend: this is a resort of four- and five-star hotels, with only a handful of cheaper guesthouses.
Best areas to stay in Obergurgl-Hochgurgl
Obergurgl village
The main base, at around 1,930 m, with the church, shops, ski schools and most of the restaurants. Several of the big hotels are on the slopes at the top of the village, up to about 2,000 m, with skiing from the door. Others are on the main road at the village entrance, a short walk or ski-bus ride from the lifts. Evenings are quiet: this is not a party resort, although the Monday night skiing on the Rosskarbahn livens things up.
Hochgurgl
A cluster of hotels at around 2,150 m, a little way up the Timmelsjoch road, at the foot of the Hochgurgl lifts. It’s higher, smaller and even quieter than Obergurgl, with ski-in/ski-out from the door. The Thursday night skiing on the Hochgurglbahn and the floodlit toboggan run down to Pill are right on your doorstep. There’s very little beyond the hotels, so it suits people who are happy to spend their evenings in the hotel spa or bar.

Good-value places to stay in Obergurgl-Hochgurgl

Holiday apartments and guesthouses in Obergurgl are the other option. Tips for booking a last-minute stay in Obergurgl-Hochgurgl
- On the slopes or on the road? Not every Obergurgl hotel is ski-in/ski-out. If it matters, check the hotel’s own description, not just the resort name.
- Kids’ clubs vary. Ages, hours and what’s included differ between hotels, so ask before you book, especially whether evening care costs extra.
- Look at the pre-season. The first two weeks of the season have lower lift pass prices, and the snow is usually reliable this high.
- Peak weeks fill early. Christmas, New Year and February are the busiest and most expensive. Book well ahead, or look at March and April instead.
- Allow time for the drive. Obergurgl is at the end of the Ötztal, and the Timmelsjoch pass is closed in winter, so the only way in is up the valley from the A12.
