Winterberg is a weekend place, so where you stay should make the most of a short trip: a short walk to the lifts, somewhere warm to end the day, and no need to move the car. The good news is that the town sits right next to the main ski area.

Best areas to stay in Winterberg

Winterberg town centre

The town is the obvious base. Restaurants, bars and shops are on the doorstep, and the core ski area starts on the edge of town. Hotels such as the Hessenhof, Engemann Kurve and Nuhnetal are a short walk from the slopes, and the station is here for anyone coming by train. Expect a lively town on winter weekends.

By the slopes

A handful of places sit in or next to the ski area itself, which is ideal with children or if you want to ski first thing. The Hostel Erlebnisberg Kappe is central in the ski area, and Landal Winterberg has holiday houses looking straight onto the slopes. Staying here means you can ski in the morning, come back for lunch and go out again for the floodlit evening session on Tuesdays and Fridays, without driving or looking for a parking space.

Altastenberg

A quieter village at the foot of the Kahler Asten, about 5 km from Winterberg, with its own family-friendly ski area and free parking by the pistes. The Skiliftkarussell describes it as a place where you go straight from the hotel door onto the snow.

Neuastenberg

The village by the Postwiese, with the funpark, a funslope and sledging. The lift company notes that many places to stay here are right on the slopes. Popular with young snowboarders and freeskiers.

Spa hotels in Winterberg

Winterberg doesn’t have five-star luxury, but it does have comfortable four-star spa hotels:

  • Hotel Hessenhof, town centre: a four-star wellness hotel with 39 rooms, a pool, sauna, wellness garden and beauty treatments, right in the town centre.
  • Hotel Engemann Kurve, town centre: a family-run four-star with 16 rooms and suites, a pool, sauna and a fireside lounge, 150 m from the shopping street and within walking distance of the ski area.

Good-value places to stay in Winterberg

  • Hostel Erlebnisberg Kappe: the budget pick, with simple rooms for singles, families and groups, right in the ski area.
  • Hotel Brabander: a holiday hotel whose ski school, with its own children’s slope, is right by the Skiliftkarussell. It’s a partner in the Kids on Ski programme.
  • Pension De Gasterei: a cosy guesthouse close to the core area and right by the Altastenberg slopes.
  • Holiday apartments: for groups and families, apartments in Winterberg and the villages are often better value than hotels, especially for two nights.

Tips for booking a last-minute stay in Winterberg

  • Check the snow and lifts before you book. The live lift report and webcams show what’s open. Two good nights after a cold snap beat a long weekend in drizzle.
  • Arrive on Friday if you can. The tourist office says overnight guests who arrive on Friday morning miss the worst weekend traffic.
  • Leave the car. Many hotels are walkable from the lifts, the ski bus is free with your lift ticket, and the SauerlandCard from your host gives free local buses and trains.
  • Ask about parking. On busy weekends the public car parks fill, and parking on country roads is fined.
