Ski area: CorvigliaGood for:Snow-sureFamilies

St. Moritz isn’t the first place most families think of, but it works better than its glamorous image suggests. The ski school is well organised, there are dedicated children’s zones on Corviglia, under-6s ride most lifts free, and there’s a big indoor pool for bad-weather days. The main drawbacks are the cost and the cold.

Is St. Moritz good for families?

Yes, for families who don’t mind the price. What works:

  • Family-friendly Corviglia. Corviglia, Marguns and Muottas Muragl carry the red Eviva Famiglia label for family-friendly businesses.
  • Free lifts for under-6s on most of the Engadin’s lifts, when they’re with their parents.
  • Reliable snow at high altitude, and several ski areas within a short bus ride.
  • Free public transport in the Upper Engadin for guests at participating accommodation staying more than one night.

What doesn’t: the ski areas aren’t linked, so moving between them with small children and kit takes effort, and Dorf is expensive. For a calmer, cheaper base, look at Bad or Celerina in where to stay in St. Moritz.

Ski schools and kids’ lessons in St. Moritz

The Swiss Ski & Snowboard School St. Moritz runs children’s courses in St. Moritz, Celerina and Samedan:

  • Courses for 3 to 4 year olds
  • Group lessons for all levels from age 5
  • A Kids Club without skiing, from age 3, for children who aren’t ready for lessons

The school’s base on the mountain is at Salastrains on Corviglia. Some luxury hotels run their own kids’ ski schools, such as Suvretta House. For teenagers keen on freestyle, the Fresk freestyle school offers park training, lessons and camps. Check minimum ages and meeting points with the school when you book, and book early for school holidays.

Best beginner areas for children in St. Moritz

  • Safe Kids Zone at Marguns (Mounty’s Land), in the former First Step Area: a practice area for first turns, with the Mountys mascots to high-five on the way and a big archway at the finish.
  • Princess run (No. 21) from Trais Fluors to Marguns: an easy blue and a good first “big mountain” run.
  • Mountys Adventure Trail, from Trais Fluors to Celerina: the blue Princess run, then the red Saluver run (No. 25) from Marguns to Celerina. Children collect 8 letters along the way and win a small prize at the Celerina valley station ticket office.
  • Zuoz, down the valley, is a smaller family ski area.

St. Moritz lift passes for families

  • Children under 6 ride most lifts free with their parents. A few smaller lifts, including Maloja, Surlej, Provuler in Celerina and Survih in Samedan, are excluded.
  • A Family Ticket for the Engadin mountains covers the whole family. Check the current terms when you book.
  • Lift prices are dynamic, with early-booking discounts, so buy as soon as your dates are fixed.
  • The Kulm Hotel includes a Ski & Mountain Pass for each night booked, which adds up quickly for a family.

Things to do with kids in St. Moritz off the slopes

  • OVAVERVA pool, spa and sports centre: four indoor pools, three water slides and an outdoor pool.
  • Muottas Muragl children’s winter playground, behind the Romantik Hotel at the top of the funicular, plus winter walks with big views.
  • Muottas Muragl sledge run: 4.2 km with 20 bends and 718 m of descent. It’s fast, and the operator says it isn’t suitable for beginners or young children. Helmets are required.
  • Eviva Famiglia businesses across the Engadin, marked with a red label.

Tips for skiing in St. Moritz with kids

  • It’s cold. At 1,856 m in a high valley, the Engadin can be bitter in December and January. Dress small children warmly and keep breaks frequent.
  • Base yourself near the funicular or Celerina. Corviglia is the family mountain, reached by funicular from Dorf or by lift from Celerina, where the Mountys trail ends.
  • Use the free buses. Free public transport for guests makes it easier to get between areas, but plan around nap times: the ski areas aren’t linked.
  • Take the train. Three hours from Zurich main station, with no mountain passes or chains. For more, read our St. Moritz ski resort guide.
