Zermatt is long and narrow, and with no private cars, where you stay decides how far you walk with skis each morning. The three main lift departures are spread along the village: the Sunnegga funicular, the Gornergrat railway by the station, and the Matterhorn Express gondola at the southern end. Think about which sector you’ll ski most before you book.
Best areas to stay in Zermatt
Centre and Bahnhofstrasse
The area around the station, where trains from Visp and the shuttle from Täsch arrive. You’re close to shops, restaurants and the Gornergrat railway, so it’s the easiest base if you’re arriving with luggage and want to mix up the ski sectors. It’s also the busiest and most expensive part of the village.
Near the Sunnegga funicular
The funicular to Sunnegga leaves from the village and is the quickest way to the sunny Sunnegga–Rothorn slopes and Wolli’s beginners’ park. This side suits families and intermediates. One catch for late-season trips: the Sunnegga funicular closes from 12 April 2027 for maintenance, which shuts that sector for the last weeks of the season.
Towards the Matterhorn Express
The southern end of the village is closest to the gondola for Schwarzsee, Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and the route to Cervinia. It’s the best base for keen skiers who want the glacier and Italy, and for early- or late-season trips when most of the skiing is high up. The Matterhorn Express runs from 14 November 2026.

On the mountain
A few hotels sit high above the village, such as Riffelalp on the Gornergrat side at 2,222 m. You get ski-in/ski-out access and quiet evenings, but you depend on the railway or lifts to get down to the village for dinner.
Täsch
Täsch, the village just below Zermatt, is where drivers leave their cars. Zermatt Tourism lists a small family ski lift there and a sledging trail, and the shuttle train reaches Zermatt in 12 minutes. It’s worth a look if Zermatt itself is full or too expensive, but you’ll ride the shuttle twice a day.
Best ski-in/ski-out hotels in Zermatt
Ski-in/ski-out is rare in Zermatt, because most hotels are in the village and the lifts start from three different points.
- Riffelalp Resort 2222 m: five-star, on the mountain at 2,222 m above Zermatt, with ski-in/ski-out access and an outdoor pool facing the Matterhorn. Open 11 December 2026 to 4 April 2027.
- CERVO Mountain Resort: above the village on the Sunnegga side. It bills itself as ski-in/ski-out, with a spa and an après bar at the end of a piste.

| Tradition Julen Hotel | Centre | Family-run since 1910, with a heated indoor pool; children can visit its sheep barn in winter |

Luxury hotels in Zermatt
Zermatt has a long list of top-end hotels. Three stand out for skiers:
- Riffelalp Resort 2222 m is the one for skiing: five-star and on the mountain, with the Matterhorn in view from the outdoor pool.
- Mont Cervin Palace is the classic five-star on Bahnhofstrasse, close to the station and the Gornergrat railway.
- CERVO Mountain Resort is the more contemporary choice, with its spa and a ski-in/ski-out position above the village.
Good-value places to stay in Zermatt
Zermatt isn’t cheap, but there are ways to keep costs down:
- Zermatt Youth Hostel has family rooms and Matterhorn views, a few minutes’ walk from the centre.
- Self-catering apartments save a lot, because eating out in Zermatt is expensive.
- The Wolli Card makes a real difference with young children: free lifts and free nights in their parents’ room at participating hotels.
- Staying in Täsch can work if Zermatt is full, with the shuttle train every 20 minutes.
Tips for booking a last-minute stay in Zermatt
- Pick your sector first. In a snow-poor spell or early and late in the season, the glacier is where the skiing is, so stay near the Matterhorn Express. After 12 April 2027, avoid relying on Sunnegga.
- Check the hotel’s season. Some hotels open later and close earlier than the lifts. Riffelalp, for example, runs from 11 December to 4 April.
- Plan the luggage run. Electric taxis wait at the station, and some hotels will pick you up. Walking uphill with cases and ski bags isn’t fun.
- Book parking in Täsch if you’re driving. The Matterhorn Terminal and private car parks are where your car stays for the week.
- Avoid peak holiday weeks if you can. Swiss and European school holidays fill the hotels and the lifts. Outside them, last-minute availability is much better.
