Hintertux suits families who want reliable snow and a quiet valley. There are good children’s areas, a free beginner park and some very family-focused hotels. The thing to plan around is the glacier itself: it’s high, cold and a long lift ride up. Small children usually do better on the lower slopes, especially in midwinter, and in autumn the glacier is the only option.

Is Hintertux good for families?

Yes, with the right timing. What works:

  • Snow you can rely on, from October to May, thanks to the glacier.
  • A free beginner park, the Flohpark, at the bottom of the glacier lifts.
  • Childcare at the Playarena Tux and in several hotels.
  • Quiet evenings in a valley with no party scene.

What doesn’t: the glacier is cold, windy and high, and in autumn only the glacier is open, which is a hard place for small beginners. Families with first-timers are better off coming from December, when Eggalm and the other children’s areas open.

Ski schools and kids’ lessons in Hintertux

  • The Tux-Finkenberg tourist office lists five ski and snowboard schools, including the Ski- und Snowboardschule Tuxertal and Tux 3000. They run children’s courses for all ages and levels. The tourist office doesn’t publish minimum ages, so check with the school before you book.
  • Ski School Tuxertal has offices at the Hintertux valley station, in Lanersbach and in Vorderlanersbach, and a beginners’ meeting point by the Aue car park in Hintertux. Its group snowboard lessons start from age 8.
  • Book early for school holidays, when children’s groups fill up.

Childcare and nurseries in Hintertux

The Playarena Tux offers baby and child care, alongside a 1,200 m² indoor play area with a soft play zone, a high ropes course and a climbing garden. It’s the obvious plan for a cold or stormy day.

Several hotels run their own care too. The Hintertuxerhof has baby and child care and a kids’ programme, and Hotel Bergfried in Lanersbach has a Kids & Teens Club with supervised care from morning to evening. Check ages and hours directly.

Best beginner areas for children in Hintertux

  • Flohpark Hintertux: a beginner area near the valley station car park, with conveyor belts, beginner lifts and a carousel. It’s free and doesn’t need a ski pass.
  • Kidsslope and Funslope Hintertux: fun runs in the Sommerbergalm area, with a snow tunnel, steep curves, waves and big snow sculptures. You’ll need a ski pass, and they’re not for complete beginners.
  • Eggalm children’s park: a short distance from the Eggalm mountain station above Lanersbach, good for first turns, with the Bärenroute, a children’s run that circles the park and ends at the Lattenalm.
  • Kidsslope Rastkogel and Pepi’s Kinderland on the Penkenjoch are further afield in the wider Zillertal 3000 ski area.

Eggalm, Rastkogel and the Penkenjoch open on 4 December 2026.

Hintertux lift passes for families

  • In autumn, you need a glacier pass. From December, the Zillertal 3000 pass covers the glacier plus Eggalm, Rastkogel, Finkenberg and the Penken.
  • The Flohpark is free, so beginners don’t need a pass at all for their first days.
  • Children’s rates and free ages are set by the lift company and differ between seasons, so check the current rules when you buy and bring ID for each child.

Things to do with kids in Hintertux off the slopes

  • Natur Eis Palast: a cave inside the glacier, 30 m below the slopes and about a 10-minute walk from the Gletscherbus 3 top station. Tours run daily, all year, take about 70 minutes and include a boat trip on a glacier lake. They’re for children aged 6 and over, who need to be reasonably fit.
  • Playarena Tux, for rainy or cold days.
  • Tobogganing, winter walks, ice skating and curling in the valley.

Best family hotels in Hintertux

The Hintertuxerhof is a dedicated children’s hotel at the foot of the glacier, with baby and child care, family suites and a playground, open all year. Hotel Bergfried in Lanersbach has a Kids & Teens Club and a children’s water park. Hotel Alpenhof has a family spa area and family suites. See where to stay in Hintertux.

Tips for skiing in Hintertux with kids

  • It’s very cold up top. At 3,250 m, wind chill can be bitter even in spring and autumn. Pack proper layers, mittens and face protection, and save the glacier for calm, clear days.
  • Altitude. Going from the valley to over 3,000 m in about 40 minutes affects some people. Keep children hydrated, take breaks and come down if anyone feels unwell.
  • Summer skiing isn’t for beginners. When it runs, only a small area at the top is open, and the snow turns slushy by late morning. It’s fun for confident young skiers, but not for first lessons. In 2026 there was no skiing at all from late July to 2 October.
  • For first-timers, come in midwinter. From December, Eggalm is gentler and warmer than the glacier.
