Accommodation in the Tux valley is spread along a single road, from Vorderlanersbach and Lanersbach up to Hintertux at the end. The best base depends on what you’re coming for. In autumn, spring and summer, only the glacier is open, so you want to be as close to it as possible. From December to April, the wider Zillertal 3000 ski area is open, and Lanersbach becomes the more practical choice.
Best areas to stay in Hintertux
Hintertux village
The village at the foot of the glacier, at around 1,500 m. It’s the obvious base for autumn, spring and summer skiing, because you’re minutes from the Sommerberg gondola and the glacier lifts. It’s small and quiet, with a handful of hotels, most of them with big spas, which helps on bad-weather days. The free Flohpark beginner area and the ski school’s beginner meeting point are here too. Non-skiers aren’t stuck either: the lifts run every day of the year, and tours of the Natur Eis Palast, the cave inside the glacier, run daily for visitors aged 6 and over.

Madseit and Juns
Small hamlets between Hintertux and Lanersbach. They’re quieter still, and you’ll need the ski bus or a car to reach the lifts. In autumn, check how often the bus runs to the glacier before you book.
Lanersbach and Vorderlanersbach
The bigger villages lower down the valley, with the Eggalm lifts and the tourist office. They’re a better base in midwinter, from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, when Eggalm and Rastkogel are open, but further from the glacier in autumn. The Eggalm children’s park and the Bärenroute children’s run are just above Lanersbach.
Hotels closest to the Hintertux Glacier lifts
There’s no ski-in/ski-out to speak of on the glacier itself, but several hotels are minutes from the valley station:
- Alpenbad Hotel Hohenhaus: four-star in the village centre, 3 minutes from the lift, with an indoor pool. Open from late September to mid-May.
- Hintertuxerhof: at the foot of the glacier, open all year.
- Hotel Klausnerhof: about 2 minutes by car or ski bus from the glacier lifts, open all year.

Luxury and spa hotels in Hintertux
Hintertux’s top hotels are built around their spas, which makes sense in a place where the glacier can be cold and windy:
- Hotel Alpenhof: four-star superior with a 4,000 m² spa and a 20 m pool.
- Hotel Klausnerhof: four-star, with indoor and outdoor panorama pools.
- Hotel Bergfried, Lanersbach: a spa hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Good-value places to stay in Hintertux
The valley has plenty of guesthouses, B&Bs and holiday apartments, bookable through the Tux-Finkenberg tourist office, if you’d rather not pay for a spa hotel. They’re spread through Hintertux, Madseit, Juns, Lanersbach and Vorderlanersbach. For midwinter trips, Lanersbach and Vorderlanersbach usually have the widest choice. The Tuxer Sportbus, with seven electric buses, links the villages with the lifts.
Tips for booking a last-minute stay in Hintertux
- Check the hotel is open. Many hotels close for part of the year. The Hintertuxerhof and the Klausnerhof are open year-round, while the Hohenhaus opens from late September to mid-May.
- Glacier trips: stay in Hintertux. In autumn and summer, only the glacier is open, so staying at the top of the valley saves a daily drive or bus ride.
- Midwinter: Lanersbach works well. From December to April, Lanersbach puts you on the Eggalm lifts, with the glacier a short bus ride away.
- Avoid autumn weekends if you can. In October and November the glacier is one of the few places open in Austria, so weekends can be busy. Weekdays are usually quieter.
- Summer: check skiing before you book. The lifts run all year, but in 2026 skiing paused from late July to 2 October. If you’re coming to ski in summer, confirm it’s running for your dates.
