Kitzbühel works surprisingly well for families with beginners. The free practice lifts in the valley mean children can learn without a lift pass, the Kitzbüheler Horn is a compact mountain where groups can easily meet up, and there’s plenty to do in town. The catch is the altitude: snow can be patchy, especially low down.

Is Kitzbühel good for families?

Yes, with one big caveat. What works:

  • 10 free practice lifts in the valley, so children can learn without a lift pass.
  • Lots of ski schools, with lessons in German and English.
  • Plenty to do off the slopes, from a pool with slides to a wildlife park.
  • Easy to reach from Munich, Salzburg and Innsbruck, by car or train.

The caveat: the town is at 762 m, and the valley practice lifts are the first to suffer in a mild spell. Check the KitzSki piste and lift status before you book, especially if your children are beginners.

Ski schools and kids’ lessons in Kitzbühel

  • There are 18 ski schools across Kitzbühel, Reith, Jochberg and Aurach, with lessons in German and English, including the Kitzbühel ski school “Rote Teufel”.
  • The tourist office says children can usually start playfully from around age 3, but minimum ages, group sizes and lesson times vary by school, so check minimum ages with the school before you book.
  • Book early for school holidays, especially for the youngest groups.

Childcare and nurseries in Kitzbühel

We couldn’t confirm a public nursery or a ski kindergarten for under-3s. Ask the ski schools or your hotel what they offer. The Kempinski Hotel Das Tirol in Jochberg runs a children’s programme in the festive season.

Best beginner areas for children in Kitzbühel

  • Free practice lifts in the valley: in Kitzbühel next to the Hahnenkammbahn (Mocking, Rasmusleiten and Ministreif, with two magic carpets and a T-bar), in Reith (a magic carpet and T-bar), in Jochberg next to the Kempinski Hotel, and at Pass Thurn. No lift pass needed.
  • Kitz Mini Streif at Rasmusleiten: nine features that bring the Streif down to child size.
  • Kitzbüheler Horn: beginner slopes below the Alpenhaus and a Family Park with a wave run, SnowX track and snow tubing.
  • Bärenland Jochberg: a nature-themed adventure area with playful features.
  • For older kids and teens: the SkiMovie run at Streiteck, Jufen Beach with a dual slalom and airbag, and the KitzSki Snowpark.

Kitzbühel lift passes for families

  • Beginners don’t need a pass for the 10 free practice lifts.
  • KitzSki sells child, youth, U25 and senior tickets as well as adult ones. Birth-year cut-offs change each season, so check them in the KitzSki ticket shop or at the ticket office, and bring ID for each child.
  • The Kitzbüheler Horn, with its beginner slopes and Family Park, runs from 28 November 2026 to 21 March 2027, so it closes earlier than the Hahnenkamm.

Things to do with kids in Kitzbühel off the slopes

  • Aquarena indoor pool, with adventure slides and a children’s area.
  • Ice skating at Sportpark Kitzbühel, with skate hire, and on the Schwarzsee lake during long cold spells.
  • Tobogganing on the Gaisberg, floodlit from 6 pm to 8:30 pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
  • Wildpark Aurach, a wildlife park with more than 200 animals, about 15 minutes away by car.
  • Ice hockey at Sportpark Kitzbühel, alpine curling, and a cinema with a few English-language showings most weeks.

Best family hotels in Kitzbühel

For beginners, stay close to the Hahnenkammbahn and its practice lifts, for example at Rasmushof in the Streif finish area, or in Jochberg or Reith, which have their own free practice lifts and quieter slopes. The Kempinski Hotel Das Tirol in Jochberg is ski-in/ski-out, next to a free practice lift, with three pools. In town, Gasthof Eggerwirt is central but quiet. See where to stay in Kitzbühel for more.

Tips for skiing in Kitzbühel with kids

  • Check the snow. At 762 m, the town and the lowest slopes are the first to suffer in a mild spell. KitzSki has more than 1,260 snow guns, but the tourist office doesn’t guarantee that any piste will stay open. Check the piste status before you book a last-minute trip.
  • Race week is busy. The Hahnenkamm Race (18 to 24 January 2027) fills the town. It’s exciting for older children, but hard work with toddlers.
  • Two separate mountains. The Horn and the Hahnenkamm aren’t connected by lifts or pistes, so pick the one that suits your family and base yourself near it.
  • Kitzbühel is pricey in peak weeks. The valley villages are often better value for families.
