Saalbach Hinterglemm works well for families who want plenty of easy skiing and a hotel that helps with the childcare. Hinterglemm in particular has a cluster of family hotels right by the lifts. The things to weigh up are the loud après-ski in Saalbach and the modest altitude.
Is Saalbach Hinterglemm good for families?
Yes, for most families. What works:
- Lots of easy skiing. 140 of the Skicircus’s 270 km are blue, and the beginner slopes are flat and wide.
- Family hotels on the piste, several with kids’ clubs, pools and practice slopes.
- Free and cheap kids’ passes, including a free Easter bonus in 2027.
- Evening fun: floodlit toboggan runs and a floodlit ski slope.
What to weigh up: Saalbach centre is noisy in peak weeks, and with the villages around 1,000 m, the home runs can be icy or slushy in a mild spell.
Ski schools and kids’ lessons in Saalbach Hinterglemm
The valley has more than a dozen ski schools, including Heli’s, Sport Heugenhauser, Snowacademy, SkiLL, onSki, Snow & Fun and Skischool Activ, plus specialist freeride and snowboard schools. The tourist office says the schools have designated children’s areas and ski kindergartens with qualified instructors.
Some schools start at age 3. For example, Heli’s Skischule runs Böcki’s Bambini Club, a group course for 3 to 4-year-olds at the Kinderland next to the 12er Express valley station in Hinterglemm, daily from 29 November 2026 to 5 April 2027. Minimum ages differ between schools and between group and private lessons, so check with the school before booking, and book early for school holidays.
Childcare and nurseries in Saalbach Hinterglemm
The tourist office doesn’t list a public nursery for visiting families, so childcare for non-skiing toddlers is mostly through the ski schools’ kindergartens and the hotels. Several family hotels run their own programmes:
- Hotel Unterschwarzachhof, Hinterglemm: the supervised Kinderalm kids’ programme.
- Familienhotel Egger, Hinterglemm: baby care plus kids’ and teens’ entertainment.
- Naturresort Puradies, Leogang: childcare for guests.
Ages and hours vary, so ask the hotel before you book.

Things to do with kids in Saalbach Hinterglemm off the slopes

- Timok’s Alpine Coaster in Fieberbrunn.
- The Golden Gate Bridge of the Alps and the Treetop Path at the head of the valley, reached on foot, on cross-country skis or by horse-drawn sleigh.

Best family hotels in Saalbach Hinterglemm

The Unterschwarzachhof (on the piste, practice slope, kids’ programme, indoor and outdoor pools) and Familienhotel Egger (ski-in/ski-out by the U-Bahn, baby care) are the standouts in Hinterglemm. In Saalbach, Das Neuhaus is ski-in/ski-out with a playroom, and in Leogang, Naturresort Puradies has childcare and a family pool. Avoid mama thresl in Leogang with young children: it’s built around its bar and DJ nights. See where to stay in Saalbach Hinterglemm for more.
Tips for skiing in Saalbach Hinterglemm with kids
- Stay away from the bars if you want early nights. Hinterglemm away from the centre, or Leogang, is calmer than central Saalbach.
- Use the Easter bonus. From 20 March 2027, kids born in 2011 or later ski free with a parent’s 4-day pass, and the family attractions stay open until Easter.
- Watch the snow late in the season. The low altitude means slushy afternoons in spring, so ski in the morning and save the afternoon for the toboggan or the pool.
- Avoid the busiest weeks if you can: school holidays, especially February, and the World Cup weekend on 27 and 28 February 2027.
