Val d’Isère has the Famille Plus label and some genuinely useful perks for families, starting with free lift passes for children under 8. Little ones are well looked after on the snow front in the centre, with free lifts and a fenced snow garden. But with few green runs and a lot of steep terrain, the wider ski area suits confident older children better than nervous toddlers.

Is Val d’Isère good for families?

Yes, with a few caveats. What works well:

  • Free passes for under-8s, and free beginner lifts in the centre and at La Daille.
  • Snow you can rely on from late November to early May, so you’re less likely to waste an expensive school-holiday week.
  • A compact centre where the ski school, the Savonnette beginner slope and the shops are close together.

The caveats: of the 160 runs across Tignes – Val d’Isère, only 23 are green. Once children leave the beginner zones, the next step is usually a blue or red. It’s also high and cold in December and January, and it’s not a cheap resort.

Ski schools and kids’ lessons in Val d’Isère

  • ESF du Centre teaches children from age 3.
  • The Jardin des Neiges is a fenced snow area at the foot of the slopes for ages 3 to 4, in groups of up to 8 with qualified instructors.
  • Several other ski schools and independent instructors teach older children at all levels, and adaptive lessons are available for children with disabilities.

Book early for school holidays. The resort advises booking lessons and ski hire before you arrive in peak weeks.

Childcare and nurseries in Val d’Isère

  • Chalet des Aiglons nursery, Rue du Cachay: for children from about 18 months to 3 years. Places are limited and registration must be made in advance.
  • Chalet des Aiglons leisure centre, same address: for ages 3 to 11 in winter, run by activity leaders, with outdoor games such as igloo building and sledging. It can book ESF lessons for your child and take them there.
  • The tourist office also lists Jelly and Ice Cream, Popsicles Children’s Playclub and Top BabySits. Check ages and availability directly.
  • Club Med Val d’Isère has its own childcare from babies to teens, and Les Barmes de l’Ours and Airelles run kids’ clubs. See where to stay in Val d’Isère.

Best beginner areas for children in Val d’Isère

  • Savonnette, a green run on the snow front in the centre, where non-skiing parents can watch from the village.
  • Free lifts: the Savonnette tow and the Village chairlift in the centre, and the Lanches tow at La Daille.
  • Easy skiing zones at the top of Solaise and Bellevarde, marked and tracked in the Val d’Isère Ski app, for the next step up.
  • Fun runs: the ValKids area on Solaise (an igloo, a mini zip line and obstacles), the Gypaète trail on Bellevarde with a ski-through vulture tunnel, and the P’tit Cross junior course on Solaise.

Val d’Isère lift passes for families

  • Children under 8 ski free, with proof of age. Adults 75 and over are free too.
  • Ages 8 to 18 pay a reduced rate.
  • The family offer takes a fixed amount off an order of 4 or more passes bought together, all 6 days or longer and of the same length, with at least two adults aged 19 to 64 and two children aged 8 to 18.
  • If your family won’t cross to Tignes, the cheaper Val d’Isère-only pass covers the resort’s own 150 km.
  • Tignes – Val d’Isère passes of 2 days or more include free pool entries, though not for the free under-8 passes.

Things to do with kids in Val d’Isère off the slopes

  • Centre Aquasportif: a 25 m pool and a leisure pool with a river current, water cannons, massage jets and a paddling pool, plus a climbing hall.
  • Sledging on a free slope at the foot of the pistes. It’s unsupervised and you need your own sledge.
  • The torchlight descent down the Face de Bellevarde around 6 pm on Tuesdays in the French Christmas and February holidays.
  • Ice skating, the cinema and the Val Histoire museum for bad-weather afternoons.

Best family hotels in Val d’Isère

Club Med Val d’Isère is the most complete family package, with lessons, a ski pass and childcare in age groups from 0 to 2 up to 14 to 17. Les Barmes de l’Ours and Airelles both run kids’ clubs, and Le Blizzard has connecting rooms and two-bedroom suites. See where to stay in Val d’Isère for the full list.

Tips for skiing in Val d’Isère with kids

  • Base yourself in the centre if your children are in lessons. The village is long, and being close to the Savonnette and ESF du Centre makes mornings far easier.
  • Dress for the cold. At 1,850 m, with lifts going far higher, December and January can be bitter. Good layers, mittens and face protection matter for small children.
  • Avoid Saturday travel if you can. The road from Bourg-Saint-Maurice is jammed on holiday Saturdays, and the resort recommends Sunday-to-Sunday stays.
  • Pick your weeks: French and UK school holidays, especially February half-term, are the busiest and most expensive. Early December and April are quieter, with lower lift pass prices at either end of the season.
