Ski area: Oberstdorf KleinwalsertalGood for:FamiliesBeginners

Oberstdorf is a natural choice for a first family ski trip, especially from Germany. The beginner areas are excellent, the ski schools are used to small children, and there’s a whole town to fall back on when legs give up. The main caveat is the snow: the family mountain, the Söllereck, is one of the lowest, so check conditions before booking early or late in the season.

Is Oberstdorf good for families?

Yes. What makes it work:

  • A family mountain: the Söllereck, with Sölli’s Winter World, more than 50% blue runs and a gondola straight from the car park.
  • Choice for the next step: the blue family run on the Fellhorn, the easy Heuberg and Burmi’s Winter World on the Ifen.
  • Lots to do off the slopes, from tobogganing to the ice rink.
  • Easy travel: a station in the town centre and free buses with the guest card.

Ski schools and kids’ lessons in Oberstdorf

There are ski schools at all the valley stations, and children’s ski schools in Oberstdorf and the Kleinwalsertal that specialise in the youngest skiers. A few names:

  • Erste Skischule Oberstdorf, a professional school of the German ski instructors’ association (DSLV). Pre-bookings for courses open from the beginning of November.
  • NTC Sports, at the Nebelhornbahn and Fellhornbahn valley stations, with a Kids Academy, a “Dreamland” for little ones and family ski courses.
  • Three local ski schools at the Söllereckbahn valley station, each with its own rental shop.
  • Skischule Mittelberg and others in the Kleinwalsertal.

Minimum ages vary, so check with the school before you book, and book early for the school holidays.

Childcare and nurseries in Oberstdorf

Dedicated childcare for skiing families is mostly through the ski schools’ children’s programmes and family hotels. Hotel Oberstdorf has its own children’s area, the Kinderalpe. Ask your accommodation or ski school what’s available for your dates and your child’s age.

Best beginner areas for children in Oberstdorf

  • Sölli’s Winter World, Söllereck mid-station: three magic carpets, a figure slalom and gentle practice slopes. The Wannenköpfle lift is the next step, and the SölliBully, a giant wooden snow groomer, is a climbing frame for breaks.
  • Fellhorn family run: an easy blue between the Fellhornbahn II mountain station and the Höfle station.
  • Burmi’s Winter World, Ifen: a magic carpet and drag lift to a practice slope near the Gaisbühl lift, with ski rental at the valley station.
  • Kleinwalsertal practice lifts: the Schwandlift, Kesslerlift and Ideallift in Riezlern, the Skikuli and Gaisbühllift in Hirschegg, and the Jedermannlift, Mooslift and Wildentallift in Mittelberg.

Tips for skiing in Oberstdorf with kids

  • Check the Söllereck first. It’s the family mountain but also one of the lower areas, opening as soon as snow allows and scheduled to close on 4 April 2027.
  • Leave the car. The guest card’s MOBIL PASS ALLGÄU covers buses and regional trains, and children under 6 ride free with a parent on the Kleinwalsertal buses.
  • Mix the mountains. Start on the Söllereck, then move to the Fellhorn family run and the Heuberg as confidence grows.
  • Read the full Oberstdorf ski guide for snow, season dates and getting there.
