Oberstdorf is a compact market town, and most visitors stay in town and travel to the slopes. That’s not a hardship: the Nebelhornbahn leaves from town, ski buses run to the Fellhorn and Kanzelwand, and the Söllereckbahn gondola starts at its own car park. The question is mainly how close you want to be to the station, the lifts and the restaurants.
Best areas to stay in Oberstdorf
Oberstdorf town centre
The station, the shops and restaurants around the Marktplatz, and the Nebelhornbahn valley station are all here. Two local ring-bus lines connect the town every 30 minutes, and ski buses run to the other valley stations. It’s the best base for most people, and the obvious one if you’re arriving by train.

Kornau and the Söllereck side
Kornau is a hillside settlement at about 915 m, close to the Söllereckbahn. It’s quieter and suits families who’ll spend their first days on the Söllereck’s beginner slopes and Sölli’s Winter World. You’ll rely on the bus or a car to reach town.
Riezlern and the Kleinwalsertal
Across the border in Austria, Riezlern has the Kanzelwandbahn into the Fellhorn/Kanzelwand area, and the Kleinwalsertal villages are closer to the Ifen, Heuberg and Walmendingerhorn. It’s handy if you want to ski the Austrian side most days. The valley can only be reached by road from Germany, and buses into the Kleinwalsertal need their own ticket.

Getting from your Oberstdorf hotel to the slopes
Because Oberstdorf isn’t a ski-in/ski-out resort, it’s worth checking how you’ll reach the lifts before you book:
- Nebelhornbahn: in town. The local ring bus, lines R 9 and R 10, runs in both directions every 30 minutes and stops at the Nebelhornbahn.
- Fellhornbahn: ski bus line 7 from Oberstdorf.
- Kanzelwandbahn in Riezlern: line 1 from Oberstdorf, a Kleinwalsertal bus that needs its own ticket.
- Söllereckbahn: the gondola starts at its own car park, so families staying on the Kornau side can be on the slopes in minutes.
If you drive, a ticket at the public car parks also covers the local bus for two adults and their children. Long-stay car parks, such as P2 at the entrance to town and the car park at the Nordic Zentrum, aren’t for overnight parking, so make sure your accommodation has a space.

Good-value places to stay in Oberstdorf
Oberstdorf has a big stock of holiday apartments and guesthouses, which are usually the best value for families and groups, and the tourist office lists rooms and holiday homes on its website. Some apartment hosts include lift access and public transport in the stay, so read the small print. The Familien-Jugendherberge in Kornau is the budget choice, reached by bus line 1 from the station. Wherever you stay overnight, ask whether your guest card is the Allgäu-Walser-Pass Premium, which includes free buses and regional trains through the MOBIL PASS ALLGÄU, so you can leave the car parked.
Tips for booking a last-minute stay in Oberstdorf
- Check what’s open. The Fellhorn/Kanzelwand opens on 4 December 2026, the Nebelhorn on 12 December, and most areas close on 4 April 2027. Only the Nebelhorn is scheduled to run until 2 May 2027.
- Pick your base for your mountain. Near the Nebelhornbahn for experts, the Kornau side for Söllereck beginners, Riezlern for the Kanzelwand and Ifen.
- Look for partner deals. Staying at partner accommodation can get you 10% off ski passes during promotional periods, and from 1 March 2027 passes of three days or more are 10% cheaper.
- Driving? Check whether your hotel has parking, as campervans can’t stay overnight in the public car parks and the long-stay car parks aren’t for overnight stays.
