Laax is a strong choice for families who want a big, high ski area without a long journey from Zurich. Under-6s ski without a ticket, there’s childcare from age 1 at the valley station, and the three villages all have gentle first slopes. The things to plan around are the dynamic lift prices and the fact that much of the ski area is high and exposed.
Is Laax good for families?
Yes, especially with young children. Flims Laax Falera carries the Swiss Families Welcome quality label, and a few things make it work:
- No lift ticket for under-6s, and no ticket at all is needed in the Snow Wonderland at the Laax base station.
- Childcare and lessons in one place. The LAAX School crèche and ski school meeting point are at the Laax valley station.
- A slope-side base. The rocksresort and signinahotel are at the foot of the gondola, so you’re not carrying skis and toddlers through town.
Ski schools and kids’ lessons in Laax
The LAAX School has offices in Flims and Laax at the valley stations, and in Falera. Its children’s lessons follow the Ami Sabi story, built around a friendly magician, with songs and games about the forest, animals and mountains.
- Snow kindergarten, under 4: a 45-minute private lesson for beginners, in Flims and Laax. In Laax you can combine it with time in the crèche.
- Group lessons from 4: beginner group courses start at age 4. A full-day course for beginners includes lunch.
- Other schools in Flims and Laax offer private lessons too.
Book ahead for Christmas and February, when the youngest groups fill first.
Childcare and nurseries in Laax
The LAAX School crèche (Kinderhort) at the Laax valley station takes children aged 1 to 4. For winter 2026/27 it’s expected to open from 21 December 2026 to 10 April 2027, daily from 9.30 am to 4 pm. You can book mornings, afternoons or full days, with or without lunch.
Two rules to know: you must book by 4 pm the day before, and the crèche can’t take sick children. The rocksresort and signinahotel have also run evening childcare for their own guests aged 2 to 8 at set times, so ask when you book.
Best beginner areas for children in Laax
- Ami Sabi Snow Wonderlands at the Laax base station, at Foppa above Flims and by the Falera observatory, for LAAX School pupils.
- The blue Ami Sabi piste at Spalegna, above Flims, where children practise their first proper runs with the FIS rules explained along the way.
- Easy runs around Alp Dado, and the beginners’ snowpark for children who want to try their first small jumps.
The beginner ticket covers the lifts from Flims to Foppa or Nagens and from Laax or Falera to Crap Sogn Gion, so parents learning alongside their children don’t need a full pass.
Laax lift passes for families
- Children under 6 don’t need a lift ticket.
- Children and teens aged 6 to 17 pay the child price. Like adult day and multi-day tickets, it’s dynamically priced, so check the online shop early.
- If your family skis several Swiss resorts, the TOPCARD season pass has a family price and also covers Arosa Lenzerheide and Davos Klosters.
Things to do with kids in Laax off the slopes

- Sledging from Foppa to Flims (3 km), from Curnius to Falera (3.5 km) or on the shorter Nagens run.
- Ice skating on the free rink in Falera, which has some free skates, or at Lake Laax and the Flims sports centre.
- The Kids Freestyle Academy in the valley, with slides, climbing and trampolines for children up to 8.
- Local buses between the villages are free for under-13s.
Best family hotels in Laax
The rocksresort apartments and the four-star signinahotel are at the Laax valley station, next to the crèche and ski school. The signinahotel has a children’s playroom and an adventure pool. In Flims, the family-run Schweizerhof has a natural stone pool and water world. See where to stay in Laax for the full list.
Tips for skiing in Laax with kids
- Pick a base by the lifts. Laax Murschetg puts the crèche, school, gondola and your room within a short walk.
- Watch the weather up top. Most of the ski area is above 2,000 m and much of it is above the tree line. On stormy days, stay lower with young children.
- Avoid the LAAX OPEN week if you want quiet slopes. It runs from 13 to 16 January 2027.
- Use the bus. Children under 13 ride free between the villages, so a base in Flims or Falera works without a car.
