Verbier is best known for steep slopes and après-ski, but it can work for families who plan well. There are free beginner areas in the village, a well-organised Kids Club and a quieter family sector at La Tzoumaz. It’s expensive and spread out, and much of its fame rests on terrain young children won’t ski.

Is Verbier good for families?

It depends on what your family wants:

  • Good for: families with confident teenagers who want big terrain, beginners who’ll use the free magic carpets, and parents who want a lively village in the evenings.
  • Less good for: families on a budget, or with toddlers who need everything close by. Getting from your hotel to ski school can mean a bus with skis and small children.

If you’re coming with young children, the most important decision is where you stay. See where to stay in Verbier.

Ski schools and kids’ lessons in Verbier

The Swiss Ski School (ESS) Verbier runs:

  • Kids Club for ages 3 to 5 at Les Moulins, with its own slope, a magic carpet, a 300 m drag lift and a Kids Village for games. Book mornings from 9 am, afternoons from 1.30 pm, or full days with a hot lunch.
  • Group lessons for ages 4 to 13, in groups of 6 to 8. They meet near the top of Les Esserts at 9 am for mornings and full days, and at 1.15 pm for afternoons. Lessons run Monday to Friday, plus Saturday mornings.

Some options start at age 4 or 5. The school says parents can’t drop children off by car at the No. 17 bus-stop meeting point, so use the free shuttle bus (line 1). Other ski schools operate in Verbier, so check minimum ages with the school you choose. Book early for Christmas, New Year and February half-term.

Childcare and nurseries in Verbier

We couldn’t find a non-ski nursery confirmed for 2026/27. The ESS Kids Club, with full days and a hot lunch, is the closest thing for 3 to 5 year olds. For younger children, ask your hotel about babysitting before you book.

Best beginner areas for children in Verbier

  • Les Esserts and Les Moulins: free magic carpets right in the village, reached by free shuttle bus.
  • Le Rouge: the next step up, then the blue runs at La Chaux, which has easy access.
  • La Tzoumaz and Savoleyres: wide, gentle slopes on the La Tzoumaz side, its own free beginner carpet, the Funslope, and Meïno’s playground at the top of La Pasay.

Verbier lift passes for families

  • The free magic carpets at Les Esserts, Les Moulins and La Tzoumaz don’t need a pass, which keeps costs down for the first days.
  • You don’t need the full 4 Vallées pass for young children: passes are also sold for the Verbier, La Tzoumaz/Savoleyres and Bruson sectors.
  • For 2026/27, the annual pass child category covers children born 2012 to 2019. Terms for younger children vary, so check with the lift company before you buy.

Things to do with kids in Verbier off the slopes

  • Sledging: a dedicated sledging area with a magic carpet at Les Esserts, plus the long run from Savoleyres to La Tzoumaz, with 711 m of descent. The long run needs a lift pass, and children under 8 must be with an adult.
  • Verbier sports centre: a 600 m² climbing wall, squash, tennis and a swimming pool. Work is under way at the centre, so check what’s open.
  • Snowshoeing and winter walks around the resort.

Best family hotels in Verbier

Les Chamois has two family rooms and a suite for four, about two minutes from everything on Rue de Médran. Hôtel de Verbier on Place Centrale has rooms for three and studios. Cordée des Alpes has a 15 m indoor pool and its own shuttle to the slopes. The Mirabeau is under a minute from the Médran lifts. See where to stay in Verbier for the full list.

Tips for skiing in Verbier with kids

  • Stay near ski school. Pick somewhere close to Les Moulins (Kids Club) or Les Esserts (group lessons), so you can walk.
  • Consider La Tzoumaz. It’s calmer, gentler and on the same 4 Vallées pass, with its own beginner carpet and Funslope.
  • Avoid the busiest weeks. Christmas, New Year and February are packed. March is quieter and often has good snow higher up.
  • Take the train. Martigny to Le Châble takes under 30 minutes, and the gondola from Le Châble avoids the drive up. For more, read our Verbier ski resort guide.
