Ski area: Dolomiti SuperskiGood for:FamiliesBeginners

Val Gardena is one of the easier places in the Dolomites to ski with children. There are two areas of genuinely gentle terrain, plenty of family hotels and a long list of things to do off the slopes. The thing to plan carefully is which village you stay in, because the best beginner areas aren’t on the Sellaronda.

Is Val Gardena good for families?

Yes, especially for beginners and young children:

  • Gentle terrain away from the crowds. Monte Pana and the Alpe di Siusi are both known for easy slopes, away from the busy Sellaronda.
  • Lots of help. Every village has ski schools with children’s courses, and professional childminders are available with flexible hours.
  • Families are welcome everywhere. The tourist office points to family-friendly huts serving hot chocolate and children’s meals, and to hotels marked with a teddy bear that offer family deals.
  • The downsides: the villages are fairly low, at around 1,240 to 1,560 m, so early and late in the season the snow depends on snowmaking. And peak weeks are busy.

Ski schools and kids’ lessons in Val Gardena

Every village has ski and snowboard schools running children’s courses, from first turns upwards. Children who get hooked can enter Gardenissima Kids, a children’s ski race.

The tourist office doesn’t publish minimum ages for each school, and they vary, so check minimum ages with the school before you book. The Santa Cristina ski school has a desk inside the Hotel Monte Pana, right by the practice slopes, which makes the first mornings much easier. Book early for Christmas, New Year and February, as group places fill up.

Childcare and nurseries in Val Gardena

Professional childminders with flexible hours are available, so parents can ski on their own for a while. Ask the tourist office for contacts.

Several hotels run their own kids’ clubs for guests, such as the mini club at the Biancaneve Family Hotel in Selva and the AKI kids’ club at ADLER Spa Resort Dolomiti in Ortisei.

Best beginner areas for children in Val Gardena

  • Monte Pana, above Santa Cristina, has well-groomed practice slopes and lifts for children and beginners, on a plateau at around 1,600 to 1,800 m below the Sassolungo. You can drive up (there’s a free car park), take the chairlift from the village, or ski down from Ciampinoi once you’re confident. There’s also a cross-country trail and the Pana Kids playground.
  • The Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm), reached from Ortisei, is known for gentle, easy slopes and is the classic family choice. A new Steger-Dellai chairlift is due there for 2026/27.
  • Fun parks and funslopes in the snowparks give older children something to aim for.

Val Gardena lift passes for families

The Dolomiti Superski pass covers Val Gardena and the whole Sellaronda, but for young beginners a few days on Monte Pana or the Alpe di Siusi may be all you need, so ask about local passes at the ticket office.

  • Young children can ski free with an adult who buys a pass for the same days. The birth-year cut-off changes every season, so bring ID and check it when you buy.
  • New for 2026/27, the Dolomiti Superski Family pass can be bought online.
  • From 13 March 2027, the SpringSkiing Val Gardena Family offer adds benefits on accommodation, lift passes, rental and children’s ski lessons.

  • Tobogganing: the Rasciesa run above Ortisei is about 3 km, from the funicular’s top station to the middle station, with night tobogganing and dinner at the top. On the Alpe di Siusi there are runs of 1.7 to 2.9 km, plus a toboggan park for first-timers. Toboggans can be hired at many huts and lift stations.
  • Mardolomit in Ortisei: indoor and outdoor pools, a 65 m adventure slide and a warm outdoor brine pool. It opens for the winter from 5 December 2026.
  • Monte Pana has the Pana Kids playground, and there’s a zip line on Mont de Sëura for older thrill-seekers.
  • Ice skating, winter walks, snowshoeing and sleigh rides, plus evening events for children.
  • Pram, baby-carrier and toboggan hire in the valley.
  • A birthday present: children with a birthday during their stay can collect a gift from the tourist office if their accommodation is a member of the local tourist association.

Best family hotels in Val Gardena

The Biancaneve Family Hotel in Selva (ski-in/ski-out, mini club, pools and family suites), ADLER Spa Resort Dolomiti in Ortisei (AKI kids’ club) and Hotel Monte Pana (on the beginner plateau, with a ski school desk) are the standouts. See where to stay in Val Gardena for the full list.

Tips for skiing in Val Gardena with kids

  • Helmets are compulsory for everyone, adults included, on all Italian slopes, snow parks and sledging areas. You can hire helmets in the valley, and the tourist office also recommends a back protector for children.
  • No sledging on ski runs, and no walking on toboggan runs.
  • Choose your village for the kids, not the Sellaronda. Santa Cristina and Ortisei are closest to the easiest slopes. Selva suits families whose children already ski well.
  • Save the Sellaronda for later. At around 40 km with roughly half on lifts, it’s a full day even for confident skiers.
  • Avoid World Cup weekend (18 and 19 December 2026) if you want quiet slopes. Christmas, New Year and February are also busy. Early December and from mid-March, special offers make quieter weeks better value.
