Val Gardena is a valley of three villages, so the main decision is which one to pick. They’re only a short drive or bus ride apart, but staying in the right one saves you time every morning, and each suits a different kind of trip.
Best areas to stay in Val Gardena
Selva (Wolkenstein)
The highest of the three villages, at around 1,560 m, and the best base for keen skiers. It’s the tourist office’s recommended starting point for the Sellaronda, and many hotels are on or close to the pistes. The downside is that it can feel busy in peak weeks. Selva also has the Biancaneve family hotel and some of the valley’s top five-star hotels.
Santa Cristina (St. Christina)
Smaller and quieter, between Selva and Ortisei. It’s home to the Saslong World Cup run and close to Monte Pana, a high plateau with practice slopes for children and beginners. A good choice for families who want calm, and for skiers who want quick access to both sides of the valley.

Ortisei (St. Ulrich)
The largest village, a small town at around 1,240 m with the widest choice of shops, restaurants and evening life. It’s the natural base for the gentle slopes of the Alpe di Siusi and the end of La Longia, the 10 km run from Seceda. It also has the Mardolomit pool complex. You’re further from the Sellaronda, so expect a lift or bus ride to reach it.

Monte Pana
Hotel Monte Pana sits up on the plateau itself, above Santa Cristina, right on the beginner slopes. You can drive up, or take the chairlift from the village, but it’s a quiet spot in the evening.

Good-value places to stay in Val Gardena
The tourist office lists many apartments, B&Bs and smaller family-run hotels in all three villages, and these are usually the best value, especially for families and groups. Santa Cristina tends to be calmer than Selva, and an apartment in Ortisei puts the town’s restaurants on your doorstep.
The cheapest weeks are at the edges of the season. The Val Gardena Superpremière (3 to 19 December 2026) gives four nights, four days’ lift pass and four days’ rental for the price of three at participating hotels. From 13 March 2027, the Dolomiti Springdays and SpringSkiing Val Gardena Family offers add free ski days or child discounts at participating accommodation.
Tips for booking a last-minute stay in Val Gardena
- Pick your village for your skiing. Selva for the Sellaronda, Santa Cristina or Ortisei if you’re beginners or have small children.
- Avoid World Cup weekend if you want quiet slopes. The Saslong super-G and downhill are on 18 and 19 December 2026, and hotels fill up around them.
- Check the hotel’s opening date. Some, like Granvara, open just before the lifts start on 4 December.
- Use the bus. Line 350 links the three villages with Ponte Gardena and Bolzano, so you don’t need a car to move around the valley.
- Check the Brenner traffic if you’re driving from the north. With the Lueg bridge under renovation, weekend queues are common.
- Look at the snow report before you book. The villages are at 1,240 to 1,560 m, so early and late in the season, check how many runs are open down to the valley.
