Our verdict

The food lover's choice in Val Gardena: a five-star, family-run hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant, a few steps from Ortisei's centre and about 200 m from the lifts. Best for couples; it takes children, but it isn't built around them.

The Gardena Grödnerhof Hotel & Spa is a five-star hotel in Ortisei and a member of Relais & Châteaux. The same family has run it for generations: Antonio and Anna Demetz turned a private home into a hotel in 1923, and their grandson Hugo Bernardi and his wife Cinzia have owned it since 2000. For other places to stay in the valley, see where to stay in Val Gardena.

Our take on the Gardena Grödnerhof

This is the hotel to book if dinner matters as much as the skiing. Anna Stuben is one of three Michelin-starred restaurants in Val Gardena, and staying in the hotel means you only have to walk downstairs. The location works well too: a few steps from Ortisei’s pedestrian centre and about 200 m from the lifts.

The trade-offs are typical of Ortisei. You’re on the Seceda and Alpe di Siusi side of the valley, so the Sellaronda means a lift or bus ride to Selva first. And while children are welcome, the kids’ club runs in the afternoon and evening, not during ski-school hours.

Rooms and suites at the Gardena Grödnerhof

There are ten room and suite categories:

  • Comfort (30 to 34 m²) and Superior (36 to 40 m²) rooms
  • Superior Deluxe rooms (50 m²)
  • Suites (55 m²) and the Gardena Suite (75 m²)
  • Five chalet suites: Alpe (75 m²), Seceda (75 m²), Panorama (85 m²), Attico (100 m²) and Garden (110 m²)

For families, there are two communicating double rooms, and children aged 2 and over can stay on an extra bed in their parents’ room. Rooms are ready around 4 pm and must be vacated by noon. Pets are not allowed.

Skiing from the Gardena Grödnerhof

The hotel says the ski lifts, the ski school and the Alpe di Siusi cable car are about 200 m away. From the town centre, a covered passageway with escalators and a moving walkway leads to the Seceda cable car.

That gives you two quite different ski areas. The Alpe di Siusi has gentle slopes, good for easy cruising and beginners. Seceda sits below the Odle peaks and is the start of La Longia, the 10 km run back down to Ortisei. From Seceda, you can also ski across to the rest of the valley and the Sellaronda. The Val Gardena lifts are due to run from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, subject to change.

Spa, pools and food at the Gardena Grödnerhof

The Gardena SPA has an indoor pool, an outdoor whirlpool, a cold-water pool, a choice of saunas and steam baths, a ladies-only spa, treatments and a fitness room.

The restaurants are the real draw:

  • Anna Stuben: one Michelin star, led by chef Reimund Brunner. The cooking is creative and modern, based on South Tyrolean ingredients. Since December 2024 it has had its own dining room next to the hotel entrance. It’s open Monday to Saturday, 7 to 11 pm.
  • Gardena Restaurant: the main hotel restaurant.
  • 4 Sajons: a second restaurant.
  • A lounge and bar and a wine cellar.

The Gardena Grödnerhof for families

Families are welcome, but this is a grown-up hotel first. The kids’ club is for children aged 3 and over, open from 3 to 11 pm, six days a week. It has an arts and crafts corner, a dolls’ house and play kitchen, a climbing wall, a children’s cinema, video games, table tennis and table football. Children can have dinner at a supervised children’s table on request, and babysitting can be booked for an extra charge.

That timetable suits families whose children are in ski school during the day. Toddlers and babies will need babysitting, so arrange it in advance.

Where the Gardena Grödnerhof is and getting there

The address is Via Vidalong 3, a few steps from Ortisei’s centre and pedestrian area. There’s a helicopter landing pad, and helicopter transfers can be arranged.

The nearest airports are Bolzano (43 km), Innsbruck (111 km) and Verona (185 km), with Venice and Munich both about 307 km. By car, leave the A22 at Chiusa/Val Gardena and follow the SS242 up the valley, about 25 minutes from the motorway exit.
