Breuil-Cervinia has a lot going for families who already ski: long, wide, gentle runs and snow you can count on from autumn to spring. For toddlers and complete beginners it’s less straightforward. The resort is high and exposed, group lessons at the main school start at 5, and there’s not as much to do off the slopes as in bigger resorts. Plan around that and it can work very well.
Is Breuil-Cervinia good for families?
Yes, with a few caveats:
- Easy terrain. Much of the ski area is broad and gently angled, so children who can turn and stop get long, confidence-building runs.
- Reliable snow. The village is at 2,050 m and the lifts run from late October to early May, so school-holiday weeks rarely suffer from a lack of snow.
- Childcare from 8 months. The Fiocco di Neve mini club means parents can ski while toddlers play.
- The downsides: cold, wind and altitude. Almost everything is above the trees, and on stormy days there’s little to fall back on.
Ski schools and kids’ lessons in Breuil-Cervinia
- Scuola di Sci del Cervino, founded in 1936 and based on Via Guido Rey, runs group courses for children from age 5, with instructors chosen for their aptitude with young children. Lessons use the large schooling slope at Cretaz. The school teaches in Italian, French, English, Spanish, German and Russian.
- The resort also lists Scuola di Sci Breuil, Ride’Em and Scuola Sci Valtournenche. For children under 5, ask about private lessons and check minimum ages with the school.
- Book early for Christmas, New Year and February, when the youngest groups fill up first.
Childcare and nurseries in Breuil-Cervinia
Fiocco di Neve is a mini club on Via Giomein, near the departure of the cable car to Plateau Rosa. It takes children from 8 months to 11 years, tourists and residents alike, from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, with a lunch service and a sunny outdoor area for playing in the snow. It works with the Scuola di Sci del Cervino, so children from 5 can combine group ski lessons with the club. Last season it ran from early December to early April, with late-April dates on request. Places are limited and booking is required, so check this season’s dates when you book.
Some hotels also have their own facilities, such as the Bergman Mountain Hotel’s kids’ games room.
Best beginner areas for children in Breuil-Cervinia

- Cretaz, at the bottom of the resort, is where children start, on the big schooling slope at the foot of the Cretaz lifts.
- Once they can turn and stop, the broad, gentle runs higher up give long, easy descents without much steep ground.
- Remember that the upper slopes are at 3,000 m and above. It’s colder and windier up there, and young children tire faster, so keep early days short and low.
Breuil-Cervinia lift passes for families
A Cervinia pass covers Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche, which is plenty for most families. You only need the more expensive international pass if you plan to ski over to Zermatt. Children’s rates and the age bands for free or reduced passes change between seasons, so check them with Cervino SpA when you buy. The resort’s First & Last Tracks offer gives 30% off 4- to 7-day passes for guests at participating accommodation in 2026/27.

Best family hotels in Breuil-Cervinia
Valtur Cervinia Cristallo (pools, spa, an in-house ski school and a magic carpet to the slopes), Hotel Principe delle Nevi (ski-in/ski-out with family suites) and Art Hotel Grivola (a few steps from the Cretaz lifts) are the most practical with young children. Saint Hubertus Resort has apartments of up to 120 m² if you want space. See where to stay in Breuil-Cervinia for the full list.
Tips for skiing in Breuil-Cervinia with kids
- Altitude: the village is at 2,050 m and the lifts climb above 3,000 m. Some people feel the height for the first day or two, so take it easy and keep children well hydrated.
- Cold and wind: above the tree line there’s little shelter. Good layers, mittens and face protection matter even more than usual.
- Have a bad-weather plan: when the top lifts close, there’s less skiing to fall back on. Book the mini club or plan a pool session in Valtournenche.
- Helmets for everyone: helmets are compulsory for all ages on Italian slopes, adults included, from 2025/26.
- Go late: April is often a lovely time for families here, with long days, softer snow and quieter slopes. The lifts are scheduled to run until 2 May 2027.
